Six Essentials For The Move

You're finally moved into your new apartment and have settled in nicely. Everything you need is at your disposal, except for when you go searching through your drawers for a pair of scissors only to realize that you don't have any. You could have sworn you did, but you must have thinking of the scissors in your parents' drawer. It's not the end of the world, but a pair of scissors would certainly make life easier right now.

Here is a list of the essential, yet easily overlooked, items you will need for your apartment. If you've got the money, it's a good idea to buy them all now.

Scissors are good for cutting things. You can open boxes, remove tags from new clothes, opening stubborn packaging, cut tape of any variety and even cut paper. It's best to spend the extra time and money on locating a durable, high-quality pair of scissors rather than some flimsy dollar store ones made in China. Though they will cost significantly more, you can expect any scissors worth their salt to last for decades. It couldn't hurt to have a sharpener, either.

Some Basic Tools

Just because you live in an apartment doesn't mean you won't need to fix anything, so it's wise to keep a small toolbox at your disposal. At the very least, it should contain a hammer and a screwdriver. This simple combination will enable you to fix a huge array of problems. Besides, how can you hang anything on your walls without a hammer? Just make sure you also have some nails.

A Tape Measure

When dealing with the often claustrophobia-inducing size constraints of many apartments, it can be helpful to have a tape measure. Unless you're really good at eyeballing things, a tape measure can be the only practical way to find out what will and won't fit into your apartment.

A Calculator

Even though it's more likely that you'll use the calculator on your cell phone or your computer, it's still a good idea to keep one around. You might not need it too often, but it's there when you need it, such as during tax time. Unless you're a mathematics major in college, you probably don't want to rely on your own mental calculations for things like that.

Some Light Bulbs

If the light in a room burns out an you don't have any new bulbs to replace the old with, you're in quite a pickle. You can either adapt to living in the darkness or you can go to the store and buy some. The compact fluorescent bulbs will cost a little more initially, but they'll produce more light, last far longer and cost you less to operate.

A Flashlight

Flashlights are convenient and necessary tools for digging through dark closets and storage spaces, going outside at night and finding your way around during power outages. In order to have an operable flashlight, though, you must have functioning batteries of the proper size and number to power it.
